Mai Shiranui

First convention Worn: Anime Detour 2006
Contruction time: 30hrs

Why I made this costume:
I loved Maximum Impact, even if it wasn't truly a 3D game. There are a couple of the costumes I want to do, and since my friends decided to do a KoF group for Acen, I did Mai's second player costume. Since I had so many costume to make for ACen and since I didn't really have anything else planned for Detour, I wore this costume with my friend Scott's Rock Howard costume. Sadly I didn't get any picture of Scott and I together at anime detour. but i did get a couple group shots at Anime Central. I helped him a little bit with his costume, but he made at least 75% of it by himself, He felt very accomplished.

How I made it:
Anyone who knows anything about how I sew knows I love to pick really off the wall fabric for costumes, Stuff that wouldn't even really make sense if you hadn't seen it finished before hand. for this one I actually used the reverse side of some pvc/vinyl that had a tiny bit of stretch, it fit my body well, was the correct matte and still stiff enough to hold shape. I didn't like it at first, but the reverse of the fabric stuck to my skin a tiny bit and helped the costume stay in place. Isn't it great how random little things work together so well? I ended up having to go to my Mom for some help, I'm currently in her "How to sew darts" class. I'm the only student. I'm just don't do darts well. Especially when it needed the amount of darts this costume had.

post Convention thoughts:
It was kinda hot at the dances i went to, with the whole vinyl against the skin thing, but all and all i was very happy with it I hand made a pair of fans for the costume, but in the end i just didn't have enough time to finish them the way i would like so even though it didn't really fit, i got a black fan for the costume. Someday when I stop leaving my costumes for last i'll do the tassles and bell.
